Framework: Professional roles within UK sauna practice

As part of our project to establish a UK framework for professionals working in the UK sauna industry, the British Sauna Society consulted with a number of sauna masters, operators, suppliers and industry bodies across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England to develop a framework that could be workable. As the industry grows and external institutions like the Department of Education begin to become involved, it is essential that we have something reliable to communicate, but that also benefits those working in saunas everyday developing careers and businesses.

This framework is based on the conversations, meetings and shared, principle-led view of professional roles within UK sauna practice. It has been developed with and is supported by 24 different sauna businesses from the UK.

The purpose of it is to:

  • Agree clear role identities and responsibilities

  • Establish a shared understanding of depth, complexity, and accountability

  • Create a stable foundation before discussing experience thresholds, assessment methods, or qualification routes

This document does not:

  • Define minimum experience requirements

  • Define assessment or qualification criteria

  • Determine who qualifies for titles

  • Relate to membership or enforcement

The working group established by the BSS was consulted on:

  • Whether the roles reflect real practice in the UK

  • Clarifications or refinements to role boundaries

  • Areas of overlap or tension

  • Anything that felt missing, overstated or unclear

The aim was alignment on what each role holds responsibility for, not agreement on individual pathways or personal practice.
