Licences In Saffron Warden Essex

Not sure if anyone can help …I am a fully mobile practitioner attending a temporary event in Saffron Walden, Essex. During this event, I will only be operating a pop-up presence for a few hours and will not be carrying out any massage, special treatments, or related rituals.

I understand that under the Essex Act, Massage and Special Treatment (MST) licensing applies to premises where such treatments are performed. As no treatments will be conducted during this event, I would like clarification on whether an MST licence is required in this instance.

Additionally, if treatments were to be carried out at a temporary event in the future, could you please confirm whether the responsibility for obtaining an MST licence would lie with myself as a mobile practitioner, or with the event venue hosting the activity.

Hi there,

Thanks for your query. It’s my understanding that MST licences apply to fixed premises, and this seems to be the case for Essex. Quoting from their regulations:

Mobile Practices
It should be noted that premises, rather than individuals, have to be licensed. If therefore treatments are carried out in the client’s own home, then the business operator does not require a licence. If however the business is run from the therapists own home those premises do require a licence.

As your operation will only be temporary, it looks like the licence does not apply. If you are asked about it, please do refer the council to us as we would be keen to work with them on adding in considerations for mobile saunas into their guidelines.

Thanks

Gabrielle
