The Sauna Safety Audit: 5 Points of Technical Failure

Before you sign a contract or allow cladding to be installed, audit your build against these five technical requirements. If the answer to any is “No,” the build may be a risk to your health or the longevity of your investment.

Zero Engineered Boards: Are there absolutely NO layers of OSB, Plywood, or Chipboard on the hot side of the main insulation?

Untreated Framing: Is the internal timber framing (CLS/C24) completely untreated and kiln-dried? (Pressure-treated/tanalised timber must never be used inside the foil envelope).

A2/A4 Stainless Fixings: Are every single screw, nail, and fixing inside the cabin made from Grade A2 or A4 Stainless Steel to prevent tannin bleeds and corrosion?

Neutral-Cure Silicone: Is any silicone used (for glass or floor seals) rated as High-Temperature (200°C+) and Food-Grade? (Standard bathroom silicone off-gasses toxic anti-mould chemicals).

Pure Aluminium Barrier: Is the vapour barrier made of Pure Aluminium Foil (30-50 microns) on a kraft backing, rather than a plastic “bubble-wrap” or hybrid product?
